The U.N. General Assembly asked the International Court of Justice for an opinion on the obligations of states in respect to climate change.
Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh stated they want the court to confirm that the conduct damaging the climate is unlawful.
Vanuatu's climate envoy Ralph Regenvanu expressed that they are witnesses to the destruction of their lands, livelihoods, and human rights due to climate impact.
Any decision by the court would be non-binding but could form the basis for further legal actions, including domestic lawsuits.
