PREMIUMReverend John Merz is helping lead a gang with 'prosocial values'
Briefly

The North Brooklyn Angels, co-founded by Rev. John Merz, has made a significant impact in the community, providing meals and support through mutual aid. With its unique logo likening it to a 'gang with prosocial values,' the organization has become a staple in North Brooklyn, delivering an impressive 2,000 meals weekly, surging to 3,000 daily during the pandemic. Community member Jimmy Cajoles shares insights about the simplicity and moral clarity of helping others in need, emphasizing the importance of direct assistance over complex systems.
Merz also asked Cajoles if he could drive a van, and before Cajoles knew it, he was doing food delivery runs to Woodhull Hospital in the height of the pandemic.
At eight years old in June, the North Brooklyn Angels is one of the largest mutual aid organizations in the borough. It serves 2,000 meals per week on average, but hit a peak during the pandemic when it served 3,000 meals daily.
