As US President Donald Trump implemented a freeze on overseas aid, several major aid organizations, including the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children, announced significant job cuts. This freeze, impacting approximately $40 billion allocated to foreign aid, jeopardizes the operational capacity of these organizations to respond to global crises. Leaders face financial strain, with high senior salaries under scrutiny, leading to necessary budget adjustments and staff reductions. There are fears of irreversible damage to humanitarian response and its long-term consequences on vulnerable populations worldwide.
Those that have already announced job cuts include the International Rescue Committee, Danish Refugee Council, Norwegian Refugee Council and war zone-focused Norwegian People's Aid.
While we continue to advocate for the restoration of foreign assistance and our programmes...it has become clear that we must take urgent steps to secure our financial sustainability.
The IRC has previously said it has more than 17,000 global staff. Since 20 January when Trump announced the 90-day freeze, there have been reports of humanitarian project closures.
David Miliband, the CEO of the IRC...said senior staff would take a 20% pay cut.
