Bigger is not better and free admission costs institutions less, museum report finds
Briefly

The Remuseum project, initiated by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, evaluates art museums' operational efficiency and suggests that bigger isn’t always better. It found that many museums focus more on engagement rather than collection preservation, yet lack transparency in operations. Data was gathered from 153 museums, revealing an average cost of $101 per visitor. This research aims to foster more effective public service by museums and encourages transparency in financial reporting and visitor engagement strategies.
"Art museums are a field about which there are a lot more opinions than data," Stephen Reily, Remuseum's founding director, tells The Art Newspaper.
"It's really important to point out that this does not mean that museums should reduce their investment in visitors," Reily says.
