Dominic Smith has re-signed with the Yankees on a minor league deal after opting out of his previous contract. Initially, he wasn't added to the major league roster due to the Yankees' left-handed batting surplus. During spring training, Smith performed well, posting a .297 batting average and an .857 OPS over 13 games. His return serves as vital insurance for the Yankees in case any existing left-handed hitters are sidelined. Manager Aaron Boone praised Smith’s performance and attitude, indicating he remains a significant asset to the team.
"He came in and has done everything he's needed to do," manager Aaron Boone said the day Smith opted out of his deal. "Clearly he's a big league player."
After hitting free agency, though, the 29-year-old first baseman/left fielder/DH has returned to the Yankees after hitting .297 with a .857 OPS in 13 Grapefruit League games.
