Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former Yankees player Brett Gardner, died while vacationing in Costa Rica, prompting an investigation. Initial assessments suggested asphyxiation, but investigators have ruled this out. Miller was found in his hotel room with traces of vomit. He and family members had reportedly fallen ill after dining at a local restaurant. While details remain sparse, the U.S. Embassy confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen in Costa Rica, and the Gardner family expressed their sorrow and need for privacy during this challenging time.
According to OIJ spokesman Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, Miller's death was initially investigated as possible asphyxia, but that cause has now been ruled out.
"We have so many questions and so few answers at this point," said the Gardner family in their statement. They confirmed Miller passed away peacefully in his sleep.
Miller Gardner was found in his hotel room in a popular resort district, having experienced illness along with other family members.
The family mentioned they had gone to eat at a restaurant and that the food had made them sick, adding to the investigation's complexity.
