"The Park Service's ranger force is in deteriorating condition and getting worse," Pacific PEER Director Jeff Ruch said in a statement. "This steady ebb of ranger staffing puts both visitors and park resources at greater peril."
"Death Valley's visitation rose by 45 percent from 2000 through 2019," Abigail Wines, Death Valley National Park spokesperson, told National Traveler. However, the park lost 6% of its staff from 2000 to 2019."
"At the same time, the park's buildings, roads, water systems and wastewater systems have gotten older, and our workload doing emergency repairs has increased," Wines noted.
