Dramatic rescue saves horse from icy pond in New York
Briefly

On February 24, 2025, a horse named Sly fell through the ice of a pond in Saratoga Springs, NY. His owner, Ali Ernst, noticed the crisis and called for help, struggling to keep Sly's head above water. Responding officers and local helpers rushed in, using ropes to hoist the 1,300-pound horse back to safety. After several tense moments, Sly was freed and taken to a hospital, initially suffering from hypothermia, but he ultimately recovered and returned home, with ice play now off-limits for him.
I was losing the battle to keep him above water alone... I threw all the rope in the hole and just started pulling it back in sheer hopes that I caught a hind leg.
This is a remarkable story about community effort; when everyone came together, we were able to lift the horse out of the freezing water.
