Recent sinkholes on New Jersey's Interstate 80 have raised serious concerns, especially after a massive one formed in December. The New Jersey Department of Transportation reported the discovery of a significant void under the highway, particularly in the eastbound center lane near Exit 34. While westbound I-80 remains stable, extensive and time-consuming repairs will be necessary for the affected lane. The area, containing numerous abandoned mineshafts, increases the risk of further collapses, with officials estimating around 135 potential voids in total.
"The bad news is a significant void was identified underneath the center lane of I-80 eastbound, which will require extensive and robust repair..."
"After finishing the initial testing, the good news is there are no immediate concerns about the stability of I-80 westbound..."
"It is important that we act now to make lasting repairs, so we don't have to come back any time soon."
"The underground is basically Swiss cheese," William Kroth, executive director of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, told PIX11.
