Abdul Carter feels 'good' about his new number after selection drama

Rookie Abdul Carter began his journey with the New York Giants wearing jersey No. 51, as jersey numbers 56 and 11 are retired for legends Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms. Initially, Carter sought to wear No. 56 and received encouragement from Taylor to make his number iconic. Despite his preference for No. 11, Simms' family kept that number retired. Carter embraced his current number, stating it's a reflection of what was available, while coach Brian Daboll focuses on his performance rather than the number.
On the first day, Abdul Carter wore jersey No. 51. Not 56. Not 11. Those numbers remain retired for Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms, respectively.
Carter wore a legacy jersey at Penn State - No. 11 - and Simms said he would be fine with his number coming out of retirement for Carter, who said he would be honored to wear No. 11.
So, why 51 for Carter? "Pretty much what we had available," he said. "It was a good number."
That's all head coach Brian Daboll is worried about, too. "Yeah, he'll wear 51," Daboll said. "I'm more concerned about the player and proving him…"
