West Side Community Board Fails to Back Safety Over Parking - Streetsblog New York City
"when determining how to use curbside space, CB7 calls on the city's DOT to prioritize safety."
"By removing [the phrase], it just defangs the resolution,"
"Everybody's in favor of 'safety,' but compared to what? That's the question: what are you willing to sacrifice for safety?"
"The problem is the language, 'the storage of private vehicles,'"
Manhattan Community Board 7 twice declined to endorse a symbolic push to have the Department of Transportation place street safety above free parking. The Transportation Committee approved a resolution urging DOT to prioritize safety only after deleting the phrase "over the storage of private vehicles." The deletion removed the resolution's explicit comparison and drew criticism that the move neutered its intent. Board member Ken Coughlin warned that removing the phrase defanged the resolution and questioned trade-offs for safety. Other members labeled the deleted language political, and a prior similar resolution was also rejected by the full board.
