The United Nations condemned Rebecca Cheptegei's brutal murder, stating, "Gender-based violence is one of the most prevalent human rights violations... We strongly condemn the murder of Rebecca Cheptegei, the third elite runner to be murdered in Kenya, emphasizing that all suspects were intimate partners of the athletes and calling for no impunity for perpetrators. The trend of #femicide must be stopped."
Joseph Cheptegei recounted the tragic circumstances, saying, "Marangach had been in constant disputes with my daughter over property. He bought five litres of petrol and hid before the attack, pouring it on her and lighting it while she was defenseless."
Daniel Lang'at, a spokesperson from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, revealed the tragic aftermath, explaining, "Marangach died from the injuries sustained in the attack after pouring petrol on Cheptegei. He had 30 percent burns and couldn't survive the intensive treatment."
