The National Trust's annual list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places calls attention to critically endangered sites across the country. Founded in 1988, this initiative has spotlighted over 350 locations, emphasizing their value and the need for action. This year, key endangered sites include Cedar Key, Florida, threatened by climate change, and Hotel Casa Blanca in Michigan, which has been vacant for decades. Carol Quillen, the National Trust's president, stresses the vital role local communities play in preserving these sites, showcasing their importance for cultural heritage, community cohesion, and environmental health.
"Across the United States, compelling, meaningful historic sites are at risk, whether from natural disasters, underutilization, neglect, or lack of awareness," Carol Quillen noted.
"Each site on this year's list has inspired passionate supporters from their surrounding communities to work together to save these cherished landmarks and repurpose them for the public."
"Their leadership shows the power of preservation to create stronger communities, energized local economies, and a healthier environment for everyone."
