Freddie Owens was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. local time after being given a lethal injection, marking South Carolina's first execution in 13 years.
Owens was convicted of killing convenience store clerk Irene Graves during a robbery in 1997, where he was reported to have shot her after she couldn't open a safe.
Owens' conviction came after a co-defendant testified against him, though that testimony was later recanted; while in jail, he also killed another inmate.
The state's last execution was in 2011, taking a decade to resume capital punishment due to issues with obtaining lethal injection drugs.
