On this day in 1945, Vice Adm. John S. McCain, the commander of Task Force 38, died less than 24 hours after returning from surrender ceremonies in the Pacific.
The strain of the final battle against Japan took its toll on Adm. McCain, who was said to be worn out from the extensive efforts that marked the last four months of the war.
Adm. McCain, who had dedicated 41 years to the navy, passed away at his home in Coronado due to a sudden heart attack.
The navy physician described the slight, wiry admiral as exhausted, illustrating the significant physical and emotional demands placed on him during the war's conclusion.
