Sean Duffy's 'Great America Road Trip' Wants You to Drive to Central Park - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

The US Secretary of Transportation launched a "Great American Road Trip" campaign promoting car travel to tourist destinations, including numerous landmarks in New York City. Despite the city's renowned ease of public transit access, the campaign lists car-centric locations like Ellis Island and Central Park. Critics argue that these sites are more efficiently accessed via transit options like buses and subways, highlighting the inconsistency of promoting road trips in a densely populated area designed for transit use. New York's attractions, including the Statue of Liberty and Coney Island, remain accessible without a car.
Millions of tourists come to New York because it's so easy to get around using mass transit, ferries, and bicycles. People come to New York precisely because they don't have to rent a car or drive to get to all the tourist hotspots.
In spite of that obvious fact of New York City's car-free appeal to travelers, US DOT's road trip website lists Ellis Island as one possible destination - even though it is literally impossible to drive to the landmark, which sits in the middle of New York Harbor.
