Operational firearms commander Martyn Blake claimed he feared for his life and his fellow officer's safety after Mr Kaba rammed a police car and reversed into one behind during a police stop. However, prosecutor Tom Little KC told the jury the Audi was being driven at speeds of 8mph and a maximum of 12mph when the driver struck the vehicles which were boxing him in. Little suggested that Blake's account was not only false in parts but exaggerated in others.
In his initial account of the fatal shooting, Blake stated that the driver would not stop his attempt to escape at any cost and he feared for the safety of firearms officers, who had surrounded the car on foot. However, the prosecution disputed this narrative, arguing that the actual circumstances didn’t align with Blake's depiction, particularly regarding the speed of Mr Kaba’s Audi and his actions during the incident.
Blake's assertion that Mr Kaba was revving his engine after reversing his Audi into a police car was stated to be incorrect. Prosecutor Tom Little pointed out to the jury that Blake's claim about the driver using his car as a weapon and making multiple attempts to escape was an exaggeration, noting that when the shot was fired, Mr Kaba had his hands on the steering wheel and was not reaching for a weapon.
