NY's top schools chief defends hush-hush $155K raise - while not mentioning nearly $120K pension
Briefly

Education Commissioner Betty Rosa defended her significant $155,000 salary increase, bringing her total compensation to $489,000, in comparison to local superintendents’ earnings. Despite her justification for the raise, she did not disclose her $120,000 pension from her prior educational roles. Rosa's financial situation has raised eyebrows, especially as she also owns multiple residences. A spokesperson defended her pension and salary adjustments. Ultimately, her testimony seemed more focused on justifying her salary than on how it benefits New York's school children.
"I hold two titles, 2.7 million kids, and I'm going to make less than when somebody who has 3,600 kids?" she whined.
"This isn't about being served, this is about... this is the salary," she said. "I can turn around and say why your kids being better served in District X when the board negotiated - that is their answer to who they want as the superintendent."
