NYC is planning a major redesign of 14th Street
"The 14th Street busway is already a success—faster buses, higher ridership, safer streets. But we're not stopping at a coat of paint. We're taking it to the next level with greenery, pedestrian space and stronger safety infrastructure."
"Installed in late 2019, the 14th Street busway restricted most through-traffic and prioritized buses across the corridor. The results were dramatic: bus speeds increased by as much as 24 percent and ridership jumped up to 30 percent on routes that carry roughly 28,000 riders a day."
"This process will deliver truly transformational, permanently constructed upgrades for the corridor that capitalize on the benefits of the busway and create a world-class street from river to river."
New York City has initiated a comprehensive redesign of 14th Street, one of Manhattan's major cross-town corridors. The 14th Street busway, implemented in late 2019, has proven highly successful, increasing bus speeds by up to 24 percent and ridership by 30 percent on routes serving approximately 28,000 daily riders. The new planning effort, called The 14th Street Plan: Keeping People Moving and Business Booming, aims to build upon this success by transforming the corridor into a destination street. Proposed improvements include expanded pedestrian areas, new landscaping, upgraded public spaces, and enhanced safety infrastructure connecting Union Square, the East Village, Chelsea, and the Meatpacking District. A $3 million design study, funded by the city and local partnerships, will guide the 24-month planning process.
