North Conduit Avenue walking tour in Ozone Park reveals need for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and planning - QNS
"This, to me, is a no-brainer,"
"There were a number of deaths and crashes that span from here all the way to southeast Queens. Every time I see a cyclist or pedestrian killed I'm like, 'We gotta look at this.' ...We have to get safety."
Borough President Donovan Richards and the NYC Department of Transportation conducted a walking tour along North Conduit Avenue on Oct. 23 to evaluate sidewalks and roadways. Attendees included borough staff liaison Laura Shepard, Community Board 10 Chair Betty Braton, Ozone Tudor Civic Association president Frank Dardani, and Gloria Campbell from the DOT's Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program. The tour route ran from Dumont Avenue and 84th Street southeast to Rocket Playground, through the pedestrian overpass to South Conduit Avenue, then northwest past Tudor Park to 79th Street. Several deadly crashes have occurred along North Conduit, including fatalities in 2021, 2023, and a November hit-and-run last year. The DOT began organizing the Conduit Corridor Plan in June in response to public concern.
