New sinkhole closes major NJ highway - and it's exactly where the last one was: 'Basically Swiss cheese'
Briefly

Another sinkhole has emerged along Interstate 80 in New Jersey, just two months after a significant sinkhole incident in the same area. The latest depression, reported at about 6:45 a.m., was enough for the state Department of Transportation to close the eastbound lanes and implement detours. While the previous sinkhole was linked to a collapsed mineshaft, officials remain cautious about attributing the cause of this new issue without further investigation. Despite the newer depression being only 5 inches deep, repairs and stabilization efforts are underway to ensure safety.
Out of an abundance of caution, the highway was closed and detoured... Officials are trying to figure out if it's the second coming of the mammoth, 40-foot-deep sinkhole that opened on the side of the road in December.
The underground is basically Swiss cheese... But officials wouldn't say that the same problems created the new sinkhole.
