The U.S. Department of Justice investigation concluded that the Memphis Police Department uses excessive force and discriminates against Black individuals, impacting community safety and trust.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized, 'The people of Memphis deserve a police department and city that protects their civil and constitutional rights, garners trust and keeps them safe.'
Following the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols, a report highlighted that Memphis police officers 'regularly violate the rights' of the community they are meant to serve.
As the report detailed the misconduct, City officials delayed agreeing to federal oversight, stating they wanted to review and challenge the findings of the investigation.
