Massive fire in Red Hook, Brooklyn still burning more than a day later
"We had extensive damage to this building. We had the roof collapse, and we also had the fourth floor collapse. So we will have structural engineers evaluate that,"
"The building is filled with artists and artisans. I have a good friend who has a woodshop there, some really great artists in the building. Furniture makers, there's a motorcycle shop. Mostly small businesses,"
"You can lose anything in a second"
A warehouse fire in Red Hook, Brooklyn broke out just before midnight Wednesday and remained active more than 24 hours later as crews extinguished hot spots. FDNY crews used ladder streams and assistance from FDNY boats near the docks to contain flames and smoke. The 1870s building suffered a roof collapse and a fourth-floor collapse, prompting structural engineers to evaluate the site. More than 250 firefighters and EMS personnel responded and two firefighters sustained minor injuries. The blaze reportedly started on the third floor where carpentry shops operated; nobody was inside. Dozens of artists and small businesses face potential loss ahead of the annual Red Hook Open Studios.
