'I feel like I am in jail.' Why residents at Rutland Plaza in East Flatbush say they're struggling
"Residents at Rutland Plaza in East Flatbush tell News 12 the elevators haven't been working in their buildings. Bibiana Mancero is on crutches and says taking the stairs is a challenge. "I feel trapped I feel like I'm in jail. Literally, I feel like I'm in jail," said Mancero. Residents say the elevators haven't been working for weeks and some of them even months."
"Cynthia Hammond lives on the sixth floor and says it's been a struggle. "I have a disability with my knees, severe arthritis. It's not a good feeling for me to have to walk all of these steps and walk back up. It's scary to me to know that if any one of the tenants had to have any type of emergency happen, how do we get emergency services up to the sixth and ninth floor or any given floor to help with tenants," said Hammond."
Elevators at Rutland Plaza in East Flatbush have been out of service for weeks and, in some cases, months. Residents on upper floors report mobility and safety challenges, with people on crutches and residents with severe arthritis struggling to use stairs. Tenants express fear about emergency response access to sixth, ninth and other floors. Some residents say they feel trapped and abandoned. Management says it is working on the elevators and hopes to restore service as soon as possible, and declined to comment on how it will accommodate residents in the meantime.
