"This is unbelievable," area resident Flavio Ribadeneyra told News12 Long Island. "You would never think that something like that would happen in your building or around your building!"
The suitcase was found deeper in a wooded area near the apartment complex. It is unclear how long it was there for or how long ago the person inside had died.
Police, including the crime lab and K-9 unit, were swarming the area, blocking off the scene with yellow police tape.
The person's identity and cause of death will not be determined until the autopsy has been completed by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office, according to Robert Waring, the acting police commissioner.
