Kara Young, a Tony Award-winning actress from Harlem, reflects on her journey in theater and her connection to her community. Despite the challenges posed by gentrification, she feels privileged to remain in Spanish Harlem, rich in Puerto Rican culture, where she was raised. Young's love for theater ignited at the 92nd Street Y during her brother's mime class, leading her to perform around Manhattan as a child, which fueled her aspirations and creativity. Through her success, she aims to uplift the community that nurtured her.
It's a super beautiful community, Ms. Young said of Spanish Harlem, the neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan known for its Puerto Rican culture.
Gentrification is real. It was at the 92nd Street Y, she said, that she first became hooked on theater.
Soon she was performing with the other students around Manhattan, and that set off my imagination, she said.
I recognize that I've been privileged to be able to stay in the community I grew up in.
