"This is an unfathomable tragedy caused by senseless gun violence," Commander Timothy O'Hara, the department's deputy chief of police, told WPRI. "We have a clearly innocent victim here today."
Officers responded to Florence Street at about 7:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired and found the wounded girl, a Providence Police Department spokesperson said in a statement.
The child is in critical condition, and detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting, according to the spokesperson.
The girl was struck by gunfire while sitting in a car with her father and younger brother, the spokesperson confirmed.
