On the day that would have marked Sonya Massey’s 37th birthday, her family disclosed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit settlement with Sangamon County. Sonya, who was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy after calling 911 for assistance, was described by her father as deeply loving. The case raised significant concerns about policing practices, particularly regarding officers with problematic histories, leading to the enactment of the Sonya Massey Bill aimed at addressing these issues in law enforcement agencies.
The officer, Sean Grayson, 30, has been fired and is being held in jail without bail after a grand jury charged him on July 17, 2024, with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct.
Wilburn thanked state lawmakers for introducing the Sonya Massey Bill, which aims to prevent what he called 'frequent fliers' - officers who are able to get employed at different law enforcement agencies despite having a troubling employment record.
