Jade Smith, age 13, experienced years of hallucinations and suicidal thoughts and had earlier attempted suicide at age nine. The family alleges the Administration for Children’s Services took custody of Jade for four and a half months and moved her between multiple foster homes. Jade died by suicide in January 2023 after leaping from the Brooklyn Bridge. The family pursued inpatient treatments, regular therapy, and medications but continued to struggle. Mother Terri Nimmo contends ACS actions worsened Jade’s condition and contributed to her death. ACS also faces scrutiny over an unrelated Bronx case alleging severe neglect of teens.
