Richard Swygert was sentenced to 75 years to life after a conviction for a New Year’s Day 2021 shooting at the Umbrella Hotel in Kew Gardens. On Jan. 1, 2021, he and a companion entered the hotel and waited for an elevator. After three victims exited the elevator, Swygert’s group followed them to the lobby, and an exchange of words led to a physical fight. Swygert then fired multiple rounds, striking one victim five times and killing him. He fired again, striking a second victim six times, and shot a third victim once in the leg. The victims were treated at nearby hospitals, including emergency surgery for one survivor.
