In New Jersey, Christopher Blevins, 45, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 50-year-old Laura Hughes after her body was discovered in a refrigerator in Belleplain State Forest. Blevins was apprehended in San Diego, California, and had previously fled to Mexico following the incident. Initially charged with lesser crimes related to the desecration of human remains, Blevins quickly became a suspect due to witness statements and evidence linking him to the fridge’s transportation. Police continue to investigate and seek justice for Hughes' family.
"While nothing can ever undo the pain of this tragic loss, we hope this outcome brings some measure of peace to her family and all who cared for her." New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick J. Callahan.
The man who found Hughes' body was charged with obstruction because police said he wouldn't provide access to his phone, according to WPVI-TV.
