In 2013, Linda and Mitch Bollag purchased a remote house in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, fulfilling their deep connection to the state that began in their teenage years. They met in Boulder, where both had moved from New York, shaping their shared love for the area. Although they settled in Concord, North Carolina, Mr. Bollag, a retired textile businessman, frequently returned to Colorado's mountains for recreational activities like backcountry skiing and summer hiking, illustrating their enduring bond with the region.
When I escaped New York, I went straight to Boulder, she said. They eventually made their primary home in Concord, N.C., where Mr. Bollag, a self-described retired rag dealer, ran a textile recycling business, but routinely returned to the mountains.
We rented houses there because it was great for backcountry skiing, Mr. Bollag said. And we went up there and hiked in the summer.
