The decision to part ways with K.J. Osborn was described as mutual, allowing him to seek opportunities with another team in the final weeks of the season.
Osborn has been a healthy scratch for three weeks following a role reduction, indicating New England's shift towards younger receivers in the lineup.
"We need to see what the receivers can do and what they're going to look like going forward... it would be a disservice to go to the end of the season and not know exactly what we have," said head coach Jerod Mayo.
With Osborn's release, opportunities are likely to expand for rookies Kayshon Boutte and Javon Baker as New England assesses their future options.
