The New England Patriots are set to release linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley after a tenure that began with the team selecting him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. Despite his skills and leadership, including a Super Bowl LIII ring, Bentley's recent pectoral injury and a non-guaranteed salary led to this decision. The team is also making changes to its linebacker depth chart with new signings and a shift under new coaching. Bentley ends his time with 509 tackles and a legacy as a team captain.
Bentley, 28, suffered a torn pectoral muscle last September and was scheduled to carry a cap charge of $6.433 million in the final year of his latest contract extension.
The organization previously released center and fellow captain David Andrews, while defensive veterans Jonathan Jones and Deatrich Wise Jr. both departed for the Washington Commanders as the league year opened.
