In the evolving landscape of the New England Patriots’ offensive line, Michael Onwenu's future role is uncertain as the team approaches 2025. A sixth-round draft pick in 2020, Onwenu has demonstrated versatility—playing multiple positions, including guard and tackle. Despite a re-signing with intentions to play tackle, his usage fluctuated, raising questions about the best fit for him. Player personnel EVP Eliot Wolf prefers him as a guard. Various changes in coaching staff and offensive coordinators may further influence Onwenu's positioning moving forward.
I think ideally Mike is a guard. But some of those decisions haven't been made yet. Obviously, Mike has played tackle for Josh.
Under his first offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, Onwenu primarily began as a right tackle despite not playing a single snap at the position in his college career.
Even though he was re-signed via a three-year, $57 million deal last offseason with the intention of playing tackle, he ended up seeing more snaps at guard again.
The team will have options; however, there is a preference at least in the eyes of EVP of player personnel Eliot Wolf.
