Carlton Davis has signed a significant three-year, $54 million contract with the New England Patriots but will not be the team's top cornerback. Instead, that role belongs to the promising second-year player Christian Gonzalez, who impressed in his rookie season despite injuries. Davis expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Gonzalez, acknowledging his talent based on prior film reviews. With Gonzalez's first-round pedigree and Davis's strong experience from his time with the Buccaneers, the Patriots seem well-positioned to strengthen their defensive backfield.
"Even when he was coming out of college I watched this film. I always do a little background check on the corners coming into the league - I guess it's a competitive thing," Davis explained.
"I'm excited, man. I'm excited. He's a young, great player." Davis said during his introductory press conference at Gillette Stadium on Thursday.
"He’s long, he’s rangy, has good ball skills. He had a really good year last year, in my opinion." Davis said about Gonzalez.
"Gonzalez entered the NFL as a first-round selection in the 2023 draft and since then has consistently been on the rise."
