By reaching 69 goals in a single season, Matthews became the highest single-season goal scorer in the 21st century since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. He leads the league with 104 points and 66 goals.
Ovechkin supported Matthews, stating, 'I'm cheering for him... the fans are going to love it when he's going to be 70.' Matthews, in return, expressed admiration for Ovechkin, calling it a big honor to be compared to him.
