"This year, though, the number of rematches has spiked. Two of the four games in the first round of the 2025 College Football Playoff alone were rematches. Now, in the quarterfinals, Georgia and Ole Miss will meet up in another rematch. And if both Ohio State and Indiana advance to the title game, a fourth rematch would be in the cards."
"Now, in the quarterfinals, Georgia and Ole Miss will meet up in another rematch. The Bulldogs took down the Rebels when the two SEC squads met in mid-October. The good news for Ole Miss, however, is that revenge has proved to be a compelling factor in the short history of playoff rematches. In three of the four total playoff rematches, the team that lost the earlier matchup came out on top."
Rematches in the College Football Playoff were rare while the field consisted of four teams. Expansion to a 12-team playoff increased rematch likelihood and the first 12-team field in 2024 produced as many rematches as the prior decade. The 2025 playoff saw a spike: two of four first-round games were rematches, Georgia and Ole Miss meet again in the quarterfinals, and a potential Ohio State–Indiana final could create a fourth rematch. Historically, the team that lost the regular-season meeting has prevailed in three of four playoff rematches. Regular-season results have not always predicted playoff outcomes.
