ESPN is expected to extend the Dec. 1 deadline for FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua to decide on College Football Playoff format changes for 2026 and beyond. The new six-year agreement beginning in 2026 gives the Big Ten and SEC the bulk of control over the future format. The Big Ten and SEC have been at an impasse for months, and both have indicated the current 12-team format could remain for another season if no agreement is reached. Proposals under consideration range from a 16-team model to a Big Ten-backed 24-team plan with automatic qualifiers. A possible model would guarantee four spots for each Power 4, two for the Group of 6, and six at-large bids for the selection committee.
