NFLPA stance: 'No one' wants to play 18 games
Briefly

NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell Jr. challenged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's claims regarding safety data supporting an 18-game regular season schedule. Following Goodell's assertion that as concussions reached a low during the 2024 season, expanding to 18 games was feasible, Howell stated that players oppose further lengthening the season due to concerns over injuries and fatigue. He emphasized that 17 games are already taxing on players, and any further discussions regarding season length must be negotiated formally between players and owners under the current CBA, which lasts until 2030.
We’re not sure how he’s reaching that conclusion based on the data we’ve been given access to.
No one wants to play an 18th game. No one. Seventeen games is already, for many of the guys, too long.
Seventeen games is also so lengthy that you’re still dealing with injuries going into the next season.
Any commentary outside of a formal negotiation is just commentary. It’s a players’ decision as to what they will agree on.
