How Pete Golding got Ole Miss in the CFP semifinals amid coaching turmoil
"What you've done in the last three or four weeks has just been incredible,"
"The multitasking, the short-term stuff and long-term stuff, and recruiting. It's just been awesome."
"The only reason I'm a little surprised is just the distraction part of it,"
"But the guys [players] -- it's just such a mature group. Pete and the staff have done an awesome job, but the leadership in the locker room has shown on the field. They've never flinched."
Pete Golding was promoted to Ole Miss head coach on Nov. 30 and guided the Rebels to an upset of No. 3 Georgia, 39-34, in the CFP quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Golding has led the program to its first two CFP victories and positioned the team one win away from its first national championship since 1962. Athletic director Keith Carter praised Golding's handling of multitasking, short- and long-term matters, and recruiting. Golding, a 41-year-old former defensive coordinator with no prior head-coaching experience, has managed staff juggling with assistants at Ole Miss and LSU, hired replacements, and largely kept the recruiting class intact.
