Jonathan Gannon said NFL practice rules limit contact and hinder tackler development. Teams are allowed only 14 padded practices, with 11 required in the first 11 weeks, and contact is prohibited during the offseason including OTAs and minicamp. The Arizona Cardinals have allowed 40 rushes with at least five yards after first contact, the third-most in the league, and rank 18th in yards allowed after contact per rush. Cardinals coaches still run tackling drills in some form, but Gannon said no drill can fully replicate game conditions, and he declined to lobby for rule changes.
