Future CFP format still undecided after meeting
"To make any changes to it, the Big Ten and SEC have to agree on what it should look like because they have the bulk of control over the future format. They've been at an impasse for months. Various models have been presented -- from the status quo to the Big Ten's idea of a 28-team field -- but CFP executive director Rich Clark said staying at 12 for another year isn't facing much resistance right now."
"Clark said everything remains on the table, though, including automatic qualifiers. "They want to be able to discuss things and understand the pros and cons for every option that's there," Clark said. "They don't want to make a decision until they've done the work and put the work in and understand every aspect of the decisions they're going to make.""
The CFP management committee met at Big Ten headquarters and spent roughly 20 minutes discussing the format for 2026 and beyond. CFP must notify ESPN by Dec. 1 if expansion beyond 12 teams is desired. The Big Ten and SEC control most decision-making and must agree on any format changes; they have been at an impasse for months. Proposed models range from the status quo to a 28-team field. Staying at 12 for another year is not facing much resistance, and automatic qualifiers remain under consideration. No full committee meeting is scheduled before the national championship; smaller group discussions will continue.
