Former Raider Doug Martin's Family Sought Help With Mental Health Before His Death | KQED
"Doug's parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support,"
"Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor's residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police."
"It's not usual for a person to be taken into custody for a burglary and dies shortly thereafter," Burris said. "Doesn't have to be the police officer's fault ... but these are the kinds of things they need to find out."
Oakland police arrested Doug Martin after responding to a reported residential break-in in the Chabot Park neighborhood just after 4 a.m. Officers were also informed that a person in the area was experiencing a medical emergency around the same time. Martin's parents had contacted local authorities seeking medical assistance for him. Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Martin fled his home and entered a neighbor's residence two doors down, where police took him into custody. Family said Martin was struggling with a mental health challenge and that mental health, his history as a football player, or possible substance use could have been factors. Martin was born in Oakland, raised in Stockton, starred at St. Mary's High School, played four seasons at Boise State, and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.
