Zoox has inaugurated the US's first purpose-built robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California, with plans to manufacture over 10,000 autonomous vehicles each year. The factory will support the launch of Zoox's commercial ride-hailing services in major cities, notably Las Vegas and San Francisco. Unlike competitors, Zoox focuses on manufacturing vehicles from scratch without traditional car controls. While the facility incorporates some automation, many assembly tasks are performed manually. Zoox is still under federal scrutiny concerning the certification process for its unique vehicles, which lack steering wheels.
"Today, we're producing roughly one robotaxi every day, and we will continue to scale this over the coming year," a Zoox spokesperson told Business Insider.
Unlike many competitors, like Tesla, Nvidia, and Waymo, which retrofit existing cars, Zoox is focused on building autonomous vehicles from the ground up without a steering wheel or driver's seat.
