The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has approved new regulations that provide a 5% pay increase for Uber and Lyft drivers, alongside critical protections against unjust lockouts from driving apps. The changes come after years of complaints regarding companies using lockouts to evade fair pay compliance. The new rules mandate a 72-hour notice before lockout and restrict lockout duration to a maximum of 16 hours, addressing drivers' concerns while adjusting minimum wage calculations to consider trip distance as well as time.
They've used lockouts to game the rules so they could get away with paying drivers less, and... mobilize drivers against their own interests.
The reforms passed on Wednesday require the apps to give 72 hours notice to drivers before locking them out, and ban the companies from imposing a lockout longer than 16 hours.
