New York expands EV purchase, charging equipment incentives

New York has announced a $30 million initiative to assist car buyers in purchasing new electric vehicles, alongside an expansion of the Drive Clean Rebate Program, which offers rebates of up to $2,000. An additional enhancement to the Charge Ready NY 2.0 program will increase installation incentives for Level 2 EV chargers. NYSERDA aims to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles significantly, with aspirations of having up to 10 million EVs on the roads by 2050. Initiatives also include funding for community educational events related to EV usage.
The Drive Clean Rebate program has issued over 190,000 rebates to consumers since 2017, according to Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul's office. The initiative aims to promote EV adoption.
NYSERDA is increasing the incentives in its Charge Ready NY 2.0 program from $2,000 to $3,000 per port to reduce equipment installation costs for Level 2 chargers at workplaces.
Justin Driscoll, NY Power Authority President, emphasized that New York has made significant progress in developing the infrastructure to enable the electric vehicle transition.
Meeting the state's climate goals will require 2-3 million EVs in New York by 2030 and 10 million by 2050, according to NYSERDA.
