Cortland, a small town in New York, is home to the Cortland Standard, a historic daily newspaper that has endured the decline of local journalism. The author reminisces about his early career started there, where, despite a challenging path, he discovered his passion for writing. The newspaper, in its timeless building, not only provided him with a job but also solidified his sense of purpose in journalism, showing the significant role local outlets play in individual lives and communities amid a changing media landscape.
The Cortland Standard occupied a beautiful and imposing brick building in the center of downtown. As a budding journalist, I found it a miracle amidst closing newspapers.
Despite the decline of local journalism, the Cortland Standard persevered, offering me an opportunity to write and figure out my life's calling.
