Firefly Aerospace achieved a significant milestone by successfully landing its Blue Ghost lander on the moon under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. The lander touched down in Mare Crisium and is operational, expected to function for about 14 Earth days. It aims to capture high-definition imagery during important lunar events like sunset and lunar eclipse. This mission, launched on January 15, has already sent back over 27 GB of scientific data, the most collected under CLPS to date, marking a successful step forward in commercial lunar exploration.
"Just through transit to the Moon, Firefly's mission has already delivered the most science data to date for the NASA CLPS initiative," Shea Ferring, Firefly's Chief Technology Officer, said in a statement, noting that the hardest part of the mission is over.
Blue Ghost landed at 3:34AM ET in a region known as Mare Crisium. While Firefly's lander isn't the first commercial spacecraft to land on the moon, it is the first to land properly.
