Even for those who did eventually have to go back to the office a few days a week in Santa Barbara, it's a palatable commute, with ocean views. She said the flexibility has led to more young professionals buying property in town and then renting rooms to other, more transient workers, such as traveling nurses or SpaceX employees, who may only need to stay for the duration of a launch.
Debbie McComb, a Compass real estate agent who grew up in Lompoc... said the town's available housing traditionally went mostly to Vandenberg employees, agricultural workers and those commuting out of Lompoc. But the pandemic was a turning point.
But the notoriety of the city of just over 40,000 has been growing in recent years, mostly buoyed by the literal boom of SpaceX rockets... It's also emerged as an exurb for nearby, increasingly pricey Santa Barbara. And yet, in a surprising development, the community is emerging as a destination.
Working remotely has made a huge difference... We had so many people move here because they didn't have to commute every day.
